The itinerary
Ischia isn't just sea and thermal spas: the island's interior hides a network of trails crossing a volcanic landscape now tamed by vegetation, where craters and eruptive cones extinct for millennia are today covered by dense Mediterranean scrub. The hike from Cretaio to Buonopane, along the famous Buttavento trail, is one of the most representative routes through this lesser-known side of the island. The route starts at Cretaio, in the municipality of Barano d'Ischia, right in front of the riding stables that mark the starting point. From here the trail climbs towards Monte Toppo, an extinct volcano today completely covered in green: as you walk, you breathe in the scents of Mediterranean scrub, where myrtle, wild mint and thyme grow spontaneously along the path, offering a sensory experience that goes beyond the simple visual landscape.
Continuing on, the route crosses a chestnut wood on the slopes of Monte Trippodi, which at 502 metres is among the highest points in this part of the island, before reaching Piano San Paolo: a plateau where fossils of small crustaceans surface, a silent testimony to Ischia's turbulent geological past, uplifted and shaped by millennia of volcanic activity and tectonic movement.
The most scenic part of the hike comes with the descent: the Buttavento trail offers a view sweeping across the Gulf of Naples, the Campi Flegrei, Vesuvius and the Lattari Mountains of the Sorrento Peninsula — a 360-degree panorama that fully rewards the effort of the climb. Along the way you also pass a centuries-old oak tree, a landmark for generations of local hikers, and several cellars carved directly into the tuff, evidence of islanders' ancient relationship with the volcanic rock that surrounds them.
The excursion ends at Buonopane, a small hamlet that retains a rural atmosphere now rare on the island. At around 5.5 km in length, with roughly 200 metres of elevation gain and a difficulty rated medium, the hike takes about four hours and is accessible to anyone with a basic level of walking fitness, requiring no specific technical equipment — just suitable shoes and enough water.
