San Michele Arcangelo in Sant'Angelo 2026: sea procession on 29-30 September
The last festival of summer, in one of the few villages on Ischia where cars don't enter.
On 29 September the fishing village in the municipality of Serrara Fontana celebrates its patron saint. It's the festival that closes Ischia's summer calendar.
On 29 September 2026, Sant'Angelo, the fishing village in the municipality of Serrara Fontana, celebrates its patron saint, San Michele Arcangelo. It's the festival that closes Ischia's summer calendar, and it falls at a point in the year when the village is finally liveable: late September, sea still warm, but without the crush of the peak months.
How the festival unfolds
On 29 September the day opens with solemn mass at 6:00pm in the piazza, celebrated with music from the parish choir. The procession through the village streets follows, closing the religious rite with a blessing.
30 September at sunset is the most spectacular moment: a sea procession departs from Punta Chiarito and heads up towards the little harbour of Sant'Angelo. The Saint is carried on a boat followed by dozens of decorated vessels. As the sun sets, fireworks light up along the whole coast, set off simultaneously by hotels, restaurants and houses on the rocks of Sant'Angelo and Maronti.
Why Sant'Angelo is the right place
Sant'Angelo is closed to traffic: you arrive on foot, and this completely changes how you experience a festival. The alleys are narrow, the little harbour is small, and the festival fills all the available space without having to compete with cars for the street. It's the kind of scene that, on Ischia, you still see as it really is, not as it's staged to be photographed.
The village itself is worth the climb on other days too: the houses perched in colour over the cliff, the isthmus leading to the Tower of Sant'Angelo and the terraces over the sea. We've covered it in our guide to Sant'Angelo.
How to get there on the day of the festival
Sant'Angelo isn't reached by car: you leave your vehicle in the car parks uphill, at Succhivo or Serrara, and walk down (15-20 minutes) — or arrive by water taxi from Maronti. On 29 September, walking down is the sensible choice: the only road into the village gets congested on festival evenings with tourists heading back.
Those arriving from another town on the island can use the scheduled buses, which connect Sant'Angelo with Forio and Ischia Porto; evening services are less frequent, so it's worth checking return times before heading down.
Where to stay
Staying in Serrara Fontana lets you experience the festival without worrying about the journey back, but it's not essential: the island can be crossed in half an hour and many properties arrange transfers. Late September is the year's best value-for-money period in Ischia, with rates already down a bracket: here you'll find the offers with stays in September, and if you're specifically after the night of the 29th, it's worth moving a few weeks ahead.
Frequently asked questions
When is San Michele Arcangelo celebrated in Sant'Angelo?
29 September is the Saint's day. Solemn mass takes place on 29 September at 6:00pm. The sea procession is on 30 September at sunset, followed by fireworks.
Can you reach Sant'Angelo by car?
No, the village is pedestrian all year round. You leave the car in the uphill car parks (Succhivo, Serrara) and walk down in 15-20 minutes. Alternatively, you can arrive by sea with water taxis from Maronti.
Is the festival free?
Yes, like all the island's patron saint festivals: the procession, illuminations and the popular part of the evening are open to everyone, no ticket needed.
What food is there during the festival?
Along the village streets you'll find stalls with traditional dishes and drinks. It's more of a village festival than an organised event, so what's on offer varies.
Is it worth staying in Sant'Angelo for the festival?
It's convenient but not necessary. The village has few properties, and in late September the island can be crossed in half an hour: many choose to stay in Forio or Ischia Porto and travel in for the evening.
