The itinerary

Unlike other routes on the island, which tell the story of a volcanism now tamed by millennia, the hike through the Bosco del Cretaio walks you literally over the traces of Ischia's most recent eruptive activity — the very same activity that, just over seven hundred years ago, once again reshaped the island's northern face.

The route begins in Casamicciola Terme, in the Castiglione area, and immediately enters a dense pine forest covering volcanoes formed around two thousand years ago: a cool, shaded wood, especially pleasant to walk even on the hottest days, where the scent of pine resin mixes with that of the Mediterranean scrub below.

The most distinctive stop on the excursion is the edge of the "Fondo d'Oglio" crater, where fumaroles can still be observed: steam emissions that testify to the geothermal activity still present beneath the island, the very same phenomenon that feeds the many thermal springs used by Ischia's hotels and thermal parks. Walking to the mouth of the volcano, with steam rising silently from the ground, gives a direct, almost tangible sense of just how geologically alive the island still is.

The route continues towards a second crater, "Fondo Ferraro", before reaching Fiaiano, a small hamlet of Ischia where the site of the island's last recorded eruption is found, which took place in 1302: an event that, according to historical accounts, forced part of the population at the time to flee, and which today is completely covered by a lush pine forest, almost as if hiding the violence of the event that created it.

At 4.5 km in length, with a modest elevation gain of around 200 metres (the highest point reaches 210 metres) and a difficulty rated easy, this hike takes about three hours and is among the most accessible in Ischia's hiking offering, suitable even for those with little experience of walking in nature. It's the ideal excursion for anyone who wants to understand, with their own eyes and under their own feet, why Ischia is called a still-active volcanic island, albeit one in a dormant phase that has lasted for centuries.
