The itinerary
In 2004 a panel of experts voted La Mortella Gardens the most beautiful park in Italy, a recognition that still surprises anyone unfamiliar with this corner of Forio: a botanical garden born from the passion of Susana Walton, wife of the English composer William Walton, who from the 1950s onward transformed arid volcanic land into one of the most refined botanical collections in the Mediterranean.The visit, accompanied by a botanical guide, unfolds across two distinct sides of the garden. The first is the tropical valley, in the lower part of the park: giant ferns, water lilies, plants from all over the world thriving in the valley's sheltered microclimate, creating an atmosphere almost like a rainforest just steps from the Ischian sea. The second is the hill garden, dedicated to Mediterranean scrub and species better suited to dry conditions, with paths climbing up to reveal ever-changing views over Citara Bay.
Beyond its botanical side, the park holds architectural and cultural elements that enrich the visit: a Thai temple donated by Thailand's royal family, a Greek theatre still used for concerts during the summer season (William Walton was an internationally renowned composer, and the park keeps this musical tradition alive), and several aviaries housing exotic birds among fountains and artificial streams.
The botanical guide doesn't just name the plants but tells the story of the park, the challenges of getting it to take root on difficult volcanic soil, and curiosities about rare species rarely found elsewhere in Europe. It's an excursion combining botanical interest, history and landscape in an extremely well-tended setting, quite different from the wilder nature of the island's hiking trails.
