Monte Epomeo Trek

The itinerary
Monte Epomeo, at 789 metres, is Ischia's highest point and the island's true geological heart: not a volcano in the classic sense, but a block of green tuff uplifted by magmatic thrust in relatively recent geological time, giving rise to a rare landscape, almost unique in the world for its combination of colour and rock formation. This hike leads to its summit, rewarding the climb's effort with one of the widest panoramas in the entire Mediterranean. The starting point is the Bracconiere restaurant, at around 500 metres of altitude, already an excellent viewpoint over the island's south and west coast in its own right. From here the trail climbs gradually, entering progressively into the realm of green tuff: rocky walls with greenish hues, unique in mineral composition, that characterise the island's entire summit area and are rarely found elsewhere with this same intensity of colour.
Along the way you pass a memorial cross, placed in remembrance of a plane crash in 1947, a historical detail adding to the excursion's natural dimension. A little further on you reach Punta San Nicola, the highest point on the whole island: from here the view embraces not only the whole of Ischia but also the Campania coast, and on the clearest days even the Pontine Islands, off the Lazio coastline — a perspective few other Italian viewpoints can offer with the same breadth.
The descent passes through a chestnut wood, a marked change of scenery from the rocky upper section, down to Fontana, a hamlet of the municipality of Serrara Fontana linked by what was once a military road. The contrast between the bare rock of the summit and the shaded green of the chestnut wood makes this hike particularly varied in landscape terms despite its modest length.
With an elevation gain of around 300 metres, a length of 4.5 km and a difficulty rated medium, the hike takes about four hours in total. It's the go-to excursion for anyone who wants to literally see Ischia from above, understand its true shape and extent, and take home a perspective that no beach or thermal pool can offer.
