The itinerary

This hike packs two of the most authentic stretches of Ischia's south coast into just a few hours: the upper part of Forio, with its open views over the sea, and one of the island's most striking geothermal phenomena, Sorgeto Bay, where seawater is naturally heated by contact with underlying volcanic springs.

The route starts in Panza, the highest hamlet in the municipality of Forio, and climbs towards Monte di Panza, a viewpoint offering a spectacular view over the island's southern coast. The vegetation along this stretch surprises with its variety of colours and species: from typical Mediterranean scrub to seasonal blooms that change the landscape's appearance depending on the time of year you take on the hike.

The most anticipated moment comes as you approach Sorgeto Bay: here, literally on the shoreline, natural hot springs bubble up, warming the water to temperatures that can exceed forty degrees in some spots. It's one of the few places in the world where you can take a free, natural thermal bath right where the springs meet the sea — an experience that on its own justifies the whole excursion. Anyone wanting to take a dip should bring swimwear and water shoes: the rocks can be slippery and in some spots the water is hotter than expected, so it's best to proceed with caution and test the temperature before fully immersing.

After the stop at Sorgeto, the route continues through Succhivo, a small farming hamlet that retains a rural atmosphere far removed from coastal tourism, before reaching Sant'Angelo, perhaps the most photogenic village on all of Ischia: white and colourful houses, a natural little harbour, and a small islet linked by a pedestrian isthmus. The final free time allows you to explore the village's narrow lanes, sit at a bar overlooking the harbour, or simply take in the atmosphere of one of the island's most striking spots.

With a length of 4.5 km and a modest elevation gain of around 200 metres, this hike is rated easy, suitable even for those without specific hiking experience, and takes about three hours. It's the ideal route for anyone who wants to combine nature, geothermal wonder and one of the island's most beautiful villages in a single outing.
