The itinerary

The Royal Palace of Caserta is, in scale and splendour, one of Italy's most direct answers to the Palace of Versailles: 1,200 rooms, over 130,000 square metres of floor space and a park stretching across more than 120 hectares, commissioned by Charles of Bourbon in the 18th century to project the power of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. This excursion takes Ischia guests to discover it in a single day, with organised transfers and a local guide to tell its story.

Departure follows the same pattern as the other excursions to the Campania hinterland: pick-up from Piazza degli Eroi around 6:30am, the 7:10am hydrofoil from Casamicciola to the Beverello, where an assistant coordinating the rest of the journey is waiting at 8:00am. From here a comfortable minibus covers the roughly fifty-minute distance between Naples and Caserta, a journey that also offers a glimpse of the Campania hinterland, quite different from the coastal landscape you become used to staying on the island.

On arrival, a local guide leads the roughly two-hour visit, explaining the history of the Bourbon dynasty and the architectural story of the palace, designed by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli. The Royal Apartments, with their frescoed halls and original furnishings, convey the splendour of the 18th-century court, while the Grand Staircase, one of the most dramatic monumental stairways in Europe, has over the years become a sought-after film set — the palace has hosted filming for international productions, including scenes from Star Wars: Episode I, a detail that always surprises those who don't know it in advance.

At the end of the guided visit, there's a short amount of free time for a walk in the gardens closest to the palace, although the vast Royal Park with its famous cascade and the Fountain of Diana and Actaeon, stretching for over three kilometres, would need a full day of its own and falls outside the scope of this excursion.

The return follows the established pattern: midday in Naples with free time, the 4:20pm hydrofoil from the Beverello and the final transfer to the hotel. Available Wednesday, Friday and Sunday with a minimum of four participants, this excursion is designed for history, art and architecture enthusiasts who want to add a chapter of grand Italian Baroque to their thermal stay on Ischia.
