The itinerary

The southeastern part of Ischia is, geologically speaking, the oldest part of the whole island, and this hike crosses almost all of it, offering a cross-section of natural history spanning hundreds of thousands of years. At 7.5 km, it's also the longest of the hiking routes on offer on the island, suited to those with at least some prior hiking experience.

The route begins by circling the Vatoliere crater, one of Ischia's oldest volcanic formations, before reaching the Church of Madonna della Vergine, a small place of worship marking one of the itinerary's first stops. From here the trail continues towards the "Scarrupata", a local dialect term for an escarpment where you can see, layer upon layer, the different volcanic eruptions that over millennia built this part of the island — a genuine open-air geology lesson for those who know how to read it.

After a fairly steep climb, the route crosses terraced vineyards overlooking a breathtaking view towards Punta San Pancrazio and its small, isolated chapel: it's one of the most photographed moments of the whole itinerary, with the sea suddenly opening up after the most demanding stretch of the climb. After crossing a chestnut grove, you reach the summit of Monte Vezzi, at 392 metres, the highest point in this part of the island.

From Piano Liguori, a small, now-uninhabited hamlet that retains a timeless atmosphere, the descent begins through cellars carved into the tuff and terraced farmland, from which on clear days you can simultaneously see Capri, Procida, the islet of Vivara and the Sorrento Peninsula — a perspective hard to obtain from other points on the island.

The hike ends in Campagnano, from where you admire Cartaromana Bay, one of Ischia's most beautiful inlets, which holds on its seabed the submerged remains of the ancient Roman city of Aenaria, today a destination for archaeological diving. With an elevation gain of around 290 metres and medium difficulty, this route takes about four hours and is designed for those seeking a more complete experience, combining landscape, geology and archaeology in a single excursion.
