Ischia for families

Ischia with children: hotels and tips for families

Pools, green spaces and real child discounts: the properties that work best with little ones, chosen one by one.

In brief

Ischia is an island suited to families with children: bays with calm sea, pools (often thermal, so warm all year round) at most of our selected hotels, and real — not promotional — child discounts at most partner properties. Many hotels also offer a shuttle to and from the port, useful for those travelling without a car.

What to consider for a family holiday

A pool almost everywhere, often thermal

Most of the hotels we select have an outdoor pool, and many are fed by thermal water: they stay warm even late in the season, a real advantage with young children.

Real child discounts

At most partner properties, young children (0-3 years, depending on the hotel) stay free in their parents' bed, and the 3rd/4th bed for older children has discounts that in the best cases reach 40-50%. These are the hotels' own conditions, verifiable offer by offer.

Properties designed for families, not just tolerating them

Some of our partner properties explicitly declare a family focus: Hotel Parco delle Agavi has a children's play area, Hotel Cleopatra offers a family package with a fixed rate for two adults and two children up to 12 years old.

Less need for a car

Several hotels run a free shuttle to and from the port and the beaches: with young children and a pushchair, this is a real convenience, especially given how scarce parking is on the island.

The most suitable beaches for young children

Not all of Ischia's beaches are the same when travelling with young children. San Montano Bay, in Lacco Ameno, is the most sheltered on the island: calm, shallow waters, the most commonly recommended spot for families. Citara, in Forio, is the widest and best-equipped — convenient for spending a whole day without too much organising. The Maronti, between Barano and Sant'Angelo, stretch over two kilometres: even on the busiest days there's always a free spot. Sant'Angelo's small coves, reachable only on foot or by boat, are better suited to slightly older children. The beach-by-beach detail is in our guide to Ischia's beaches.

Thermal spas, the alternative when the sea isn't enough

With young children, the sea rarely fills a whole day. This is where the pools at our selected hotels — often fed by thermal water — make the difference: they stay warm even on the cooler days of early and late season, and let you alternate between shallow water and play without leaving the property. Those looking for a different day out can combine the stay with a visit to one of the island's large thermal parks, which have several pools at different temperatures — useful for children who don't tolerate water that's too hot or too cold. These remain a separate trip to plan, though, not a service included at the hotel.

When to go to Ischia with children

June and September remain the most balanced period for families too: the sea is already warm (or still warm), there's less crowding than in July-August, and more room on the same beaches for towels and umbrellas near the water. Those who can only travel in August, due to school calendar constraints, lose nothing on the weather front, but should plan for busier beaches and book further ahead — especially at properties with a pool, which fill up first in peak season. We go into more detail in the guide on when to go to Ischia.

How to get around the island with young children

Ischia doesn't have a transport network as dense as a city's, and the roads between the municipalities are narrow. Some of the hotels we select for families offer a free shuttle to and from the port: with a pushchair and luggage, this is a convenience worth checking when booking. Alternatively, the island is served by scheduled buses connecting the main municipalities — useful even just for a day out from the hotel without renting a car. For activities beyond the beach, from the Aragonese Castle to the easier trails, you'll find practical ideas in the guide Ischia with children: what to do besides the beach.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ischia suitable for young children?

Yes. Several of the island's bays (such as San Montano or the more sheltered stretches of Ischia Porto) have shallow, calm water. Most of the hotels we select also have a pool, often thermal.

Are there discounts for children at Ischia hotels?

Yes, these are the hotels' real conditions, not promotions of ours: at most properties, young children (typically 0-3 years) stay free in their parents' bed, and the 3rd/4th bed for older children has discounts that vary from hotel to hotel, up to 40-50% at the properties with the best conditions.

Do I need a car if I'm travelling with young children?

Not necessarily. Several of the hotels we've selected offer a free shuttle to and from the port and the main beaches, and the island is served by buses. Do bear in mind, though, that parking is scarce and the island's roads are narrow.

Which hotels on Ischia have a pool?

Most of the properties we select have at least one outdoor pool; many, especially in Ischia Porto, Casamicciola and Lacco Ameno, also have heated thermal pools. You'll find the full list on the hotels page with the pool filter.
