Ischia with children: what to do beyond the beach
Between child-friendly thermal pools, easy trails and a castle to explore, Ischia with little ones doesn't end at the beach.
The beach is just the starting point: Ischia has thermal pools that stay warm all year, a castle that feels like a real adventure to explore, and short trails even small legs can manage. Here's what to do with children when the day isn't (only) about the beach umbrella.
Thermal pools, not just the sea
Many hotels on the island have pools fed by thermal water, often with a dedicated shallow pool for little ones. It's a real advantage on windy or rough-sea days, and it stays usable even in the cooler months, when the sea water is already cold but the thermal water isn't. You'll find the most suitable properties in our guide family hotels in Ischia, selected for genuine child discounts and services designed for them, not just tolerated.
Castello Aragonese, a real adventure
For a child, the Castello Aragonese isn't a monument to look at, it's a place to explore: the bridge connecting it to Ischia Ponte, the steps carved into the rock, the gardens and the underground passages make the visit feel more like a game than an imposed cultural stop. It's best to go in the cooler morning hours.
Sorgeto, hot water that feels like magic
The natural pools of Sorgeto, where the sea warms itself on contact with volcanic springs, are an experience children remember for a long time — the idea that the sea itself is hot, with no pool involved, always fascinates them. The descent has around 200 steps: manageable with children who walk on their own, less practical with a pushchair.
Short trails, not just Monte Epomeo
You don't need to tackle the full climb to Epomeo to let children discover the island's green side: the Bosco del Cretaio has shorter, shaded trails, suitable even for those who've just started walking. It's a good way to alternate a beach day with a calmer one, without giving up time outdoors.
By boat, with the right eye on conditions
The boat tour around the island is almost always a hit with children, but sea conditions matter more than with adults: on calm days it's a simple, fun experience, with swimming stops in coves; if the sea is rough, better to postpone. Always ask at departure what conditions are expected for the day.
How to plan the day
With small children it's worth alternating: an active half-day (castle, trail, boat) and a calmer one at the hotel or on a beach near the property. When requesting a quote, let us know the age and number of children: we'll suggest hotels and activities already filtered for their age, not a generic itinerary.
