Spiaggia di Sorgeto

A rocky bay where seawater warms naturally on contact with volcanic springs: free, open pools, available all year round.

Overview

At Sorgeto, in the territory of Forio, seawater meets underwater thermal springs that warm it naturally to up to 40°C in some rock pools formed by erosion. It's one of the few places in the world where you can bathe in naturally warm seawater, for free, twenty-four hours a day, all year round. The descent is via a staircase of around 200 steps carved into the tuff rock, with a view over the coast that opens up gradually along the way.

Points of interest

  • Natural rock pools with seawater heated to up to 40°C
  • Free access, open all year round, 24 hours a day
  • A scenic staircase of around 200 steps with views over the Forio coastline
  • A particularly evocative atmosphere at sunset and in winter on calm days
  • You can bathe even in the colder months thanks to the natural warmth

Why visit it

It's an experience found nowhere else on the island: the contrast between the open sea and the natural warm pools, reachable only on foot, creates an atmosphere that the large organised parks can't replicate.

Practical tips

  1. The descent of around 200 steps requires a reasonable level of fitness, especially on the way back up
  2. The best (hottest) pools fill up quickly: arrive early in the morning or in the late afternoon
  3. There are no facilities on site: bring water, snacks and everything you need
  4. In low season the experience is quieter and more atmospheric, with fewer visitors
