Sorgeto, Poseidon or Negombo: which thermal park to choose

Three completely different thermal experiences on the same island: an organised park, a scenic garden and a free natural bay. Here's how to choose.

Sorgeto, Poseidon or Negombo: which thermal park to choose

"Going to the thermal spas in Ischia" can mean three very different things: an organised thermal park with twenty pools and manicured gardens, a scenic bay designed with sunset in mind, or a natural pool carved into the rock where the sea warms itself, for free, all year round. There's no single right answer — it depends on what you're after that day.

Giardini Poseidon: the most complete park

At Citara, on the Forio side, Giardini Poseidon occupies an entire natural bay with twenty pools at graduated temperatures, from 38°C down to 27°C, set among terraces of Mediterranean greenery that slope down to a fine-sand private beach. There's also a natural sauna carved into the volcanic rock and an aromatic Turkish bath. It's the right choice if you want to spend the whole day in one place, with everything organised: pools, beach, panoramic dining.

Negombo: the most scenic bay

In Lacco Ameno, Parco Termale Negombo occupies the bay of San Montano, among Italy's most photographed beaches, enclosed in a natural hillside amphitheatre. Besides the thermal pools, the park has a botanical garden with over 500 species from around the world. Its strong point is the late afternoon: the crowds thin out, the light changes, and it's the moment when the place's atmosphere is felt most. It's the right choice if you're after the beauty of the setting as much as the warm water.

Sorgeto: the free, natural experience

At Sorgeto, in the Forio area, there's no organised park at all: it's the sea itself that warms naturally up to 40°C in rock pools shaped by erosion, where underwater thermal springs meet the sea water. You go down about 200 steps carved into the tuff rock. Access is completely free, twenty-four hours a day, all year round — one of the few places in the world where this is possible. It's the right choice if you want the most authentic experience and don't mind a few steps.

Which one to choose

If you want an organised, convenient day with several pools to choose from: Poseidon. If you're looking for the most beautiful spot to stay until sunset: Negombo. If you want the most authentic, free experience, and don't mind a few steps to get there: Sorgeto. Many of our guests choose more than one in the same stay — they're just a few kilometres apart, all three on the western side of the island. If you're staying in a hotel with thermal spas, it isn't even a forced choice: you can enjoy the warm water every day at the property and save Poseidon, Negombo or Sorgeto for a separate outing.

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best thermal park in Ischia?

There's no single best choice: Giardini Poseidon is the most complete for a full day without moving around, Negombo is the most scenic thanks to the bay of San Montano and its botanical garden, Sorgeto is the only one where the thermal pools are natural, free and open to all.

Is Poseidon or Negombo better?

Poseidon is larger and more structured — twenty pools from 38°C to 27°C, a sandy beach, a sauna in the rock and in-house dining — and is the practical choice for families and long days. Negombo is more intimate and scenic, with over 500 botanical species and a late afternoon on the bay that completely changes the atmosphere.

Can you visit two thermal parks in the same day?

It's not recommended: Poseidon is at Citara (Forio) and Negombo at Lacco Ameno, on opposite sides of the island, and each is worth a full day. The combination that really works is a park in the morning and Sorgeto at sunset, which is just a few minutes from Citara.

Which one to choose with young children?

Poseidon is the most suitable, because it has lower-temperature pools and a fine-sand beach; Negombo also works well during the day. Sorgeto, on the other hand, isn't recommended for small children: it's reached via around 200 steps, the bottom is rocky and some pools exceed 40°C.

Is it worth choosing Sorgeto over a paid thermal park?

It depends on what you're after: Sorgeto offers an experience the parks can't replicate, but it has no services at all — no changing rooms, bar or sunbeds — and must be reached on foot. It's perfect as an additional experience, not as a substitute for a day at an organised park.

Which one to choose off-season or in winter?

Sorgeto is accessible all year round, 24 hours a day, and the natural warmth of the water makes bathing possible even in the colder months. The organised parks follow a seasonal schedule instead (the full season runs from April to October): check opening dates before planning your visit.
