Thermal spas in Ischia in September and October: why it's the best time

Hot water all year round, an island that empties out, and the same week that costs double in August. Why it pays to wait for autumn for the thermal spas.

Thermal spas in Ischia in September and October: why it's the best time

September and October are the best time for thermal spas in Ischia: hotel thermal pools stay warm all year, the island empties out after mid-August, and the same week on half board can cost almost half of what it does in August.

Why thermal spas work better off-season

Ischia's thermal water rises from the ground at temperatures that don't depend on the season: a thermal pool in October is exactly as warm as in July. Everything else changes. The pools aren't crowded, you can find a spot without booking weeks in advance, and the staff actually have time to look after you.
Those who come for the thermal spas in peak summer often end up queuing for a sunbed at thirty-five degrees in the shade. It's the only period when the island's strongest asset works against you.

September or October: what changes

In September the sea is still warm — often warmer than in June — and you can swim comfortably until the end of the month. It's the best compromise for those who want both thermal spas and beach in the same holiday.
In October swimming in the sea becomes a gamble, but the island is at its quietest and prices hit their lowest point of the year. It's the right month if you're coming for the thermal water, the trails and trekking on the Epomeo, not for the sunbed on the beach.

How much you really save

We're not talking about surface-level discounts: it's the same hotel, the same room and the same board, with rates dropping as the season goes on.
At the Hotel Royal Terme in Ischia Porto, a week on half board goes from €715 in August to €555 in September, down to €390 in October. At Terme Regina Palace, also in Ischia Porto, the same week on bed and breakfast goes from €840 in August to €469 in October.
These are real per-person prices, taken from the rates we negotiate directly with the properties. Availability changes: you'll find it updated among the active offers.

Thermal parks and their calendar

Watch out for a distinction that makes all the difference. Hotel thermal pools are indoor or heated and stay in operation all year. The large thermal parks — Giardini Poseidon at Citara, Negombo in the San Montano bay — follow a seasonal calendar instead and close in late autumn.
If a day at the park is the reason for your trip, check the opening dates before fixing your stay: by late October you might find them already closed. The free natural springs, like Sorgeto, where hot water flows straight into the sea, remain accessible all year round.

Where it's best to stay

Ischia Porto is the area with the most thermal properties and the most convenient one off-season: the centre stays lively even when the rest of the island slows down, and connections to the harbour are immediate. Casamicciola Terme and Lacco Ameno are the choice for those seeking the island's historic thermal spas and more tranquillity.
You'll find all the properties with thermal water on the hotels with thermal spas in Ischia page: they're selected one by one, and for each we indicate whether the thermal water is in-house or through a partnership.

Frequently asked questions

Are the thermal spas in Ischia open in October?

The hotel thermal pools are, yes — they operate all year because they're indoor or heated. The large thermal parks like Poseidon and Negombo follow a seasonal calendar instead and close in late autumn: if the park is the reason for your trip, check the dates before booking.

Can you swim in the sea in Ischia in September?

Yes. In September the sea is still warm, often warmer than in June, and swimming is comfortable for the whole month. In October it becomes a gamble tied to the weather.

How much do you save compared to August?

On the same property with the same board, the savings come to around 45 per cent. A week on half board that costs €715 per person in August costs €390 in October.

Is half board worth it off-season?

Usually yes. In low season several restaurants on the island reduce their hours or close, and having dinner included at the hotel avoids having to go out in the evening. The price difference compared to bed and breakfast is small.
