Ischia in October

The sea still holds for a few days, the island has emptied out, and the thermal spas work as always. October is the month Ischia regulars wait for on purpose.

Ischia in October

October isn't just any low season. It's the month when Ischia stops being crowded without stopping to function: the thermal spas are as warm as in July, the Epomeo trails can be walked without crossing anyone, and the hotels that stay open offer a level of service you don't see in August. It's not a fallback for those who couldn't come in summer: for many, it's the right choice.

The sea in October, with no promises

At the start of the month, swimming remains a real possibility, especially on sunny days and in sheltered bays like Citara or Sorgeto. From mid-October onward it becomes a matter of luck: the temperature drops gradually and the days get shorter. Those who come in October for the sea alone risk being disappointed; for those coming for everything else, the sea is a bonus when it's there.

The thermal spas, the month's only certainty

Hotel thermal pools don't follow the sea's calendar: they're warm all year, regardless of the weather. That's why October remains one of the best periods for those coming mainly for the thermal spas — we cover this in detail in our guide to thermal spas in September and October. The large outdoor thermal parks, on the other hand, follow their own seasonal calendar and may close in late autumn: if the park is the reason for your trip, always check before booking.

What to do when swimming is a gamble

October is the right month for the side of the island that gets skipped in summer because of the heat or the crowds: the climb to Monte Epomeo, the village of Sant'Angelo without July's traffic, the Castello Aragonese explored at leisure instead of in a queue. Same destinations as always, but experienced in a way that's not possible in high season.

Classical music for autumn evenings

Those looking for a reason not to head straight back to the hotel in the evening will find this year's "Incontri musicali, autumn season": chamber music concerts on Saturdays in October (3, 17, 24 and 31), featuring duos, quartets and repertoires ranging from Mozart to Piazzolla. It's not as packed a programme as September's, but it's one more reason for an evening out of the ordinary.

Who stays open, and why it's worth it

Not every hotel stays open in October: many smaller properties close after September. Those with indoor thermal spas, on the other hand, stay operational almost without exception — it's their natural working season. Off-season rates are structurally lower, and you can find availability even at the last minute at properties that were fully booked months in advance back in August. Real, updated offers are always on the offers page; for those specifically after thermal spas, the list can be filtered on hotels with thermal spas.

Who October is for (and who it isn't)

October rewards those seeking relaxation, thermal spas, trekking and a quiet island, and penalises those with only beach and nightlife in mind — that, by October, is already closed in most venues. If the sea is the absolute priority, September remains the safer choice. If the priority is thermal spas, trails and villages without crowds, October is arguably the best month of the entire year.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cold in Ischia in October?

Daytime temperatures stay mild, generally between 18 and 22 degrees in the first part of the month, dropping gradually towards the end of October. Evenings cool down earlier than in summer: a light jumper is recommended even for those coming mainly for the thermal spas.

Are the outdoor thermal parks open in October?

It depends on the park and the year: some stay open until the end of October on weekends, others close earlier. Hotel indoor thermal pools, on the other hand, work all year. If the park is the reason for your trip, always check the seasonal calendar before booking.

Is September or October better?

It depends what you're after. September combines warm sea, an already less crowded island and thermal parks still open: it's the broadest compromise. October brings lower prices, a nearly empty island and equally warm thermal spas, but swimming in the sea is no longer guaranteed.

Are there open hotels in Ischia in October?

Yes, particularly properties with indoor thermal spas, almost all of which stay operational. Real, updated availability is always on the offers page, since it changes week by week as each hotel's seasonal closing date approaches.

Can you still swim in Ischia in October?

At the start of the month, swimming remains a real possibility, especially on sunny days and in sheltered bays like Citara or Sorgeto. From mid-October it becomes a matter of luck: the temperature drops and the days shorten. Those coming for the sea alone risk disappointment; for everyone else it's a bonus when it's there.

What to do in Ischia in October if you're not swimming?

It's the right month for the side of the island that gets skipped in summer because of the heat or crowds: the climb to Monte Epomeo, the village of Sant'Angelo without the traffic, the Castello Aragonese explored at leisure instead of in a queue. The same destinations as always, experienced in a way that isn't possible in high season.
